Given the small number of posts here, I assume this forum is only just open. Very pretty, though....
Anyway, by way of intro, I'm a disallusioned thirty-something who wants to change career into wooden boatbuilding and restoration, repair, etc. To this end, I've looked at what's on offer in the UK in the way of training, and have pretty much settled on where I want to go.
Before I make what for me is an enourmous commitment, I would like to know a bit about the state of the business, both in the UK and world wide. I'm told that boat builders are in demand at the moment, but don't know the extent of this. Also, can anyone shed any light on such matters as: what sort of jobs are available, what sort of salaries do they command, is the business more full-time contract, or short term contract oriented, etc. I'm aware the answers may be subjective, but I welcome any advice/anecdotal evidence you may be able to offer. Thanks in advance, your help will be much appreciated.
Hi there Sean. A fellow dreamer here... I've been scouring the internet and reading the books for about a year now and it's fast approaching make or break time. I've been a desk lave for about 10 years now and it's time for a change. It's nice to find someone else who seems to be in a similar place.
So where are you now? Before i write much more i'll see if you reply, looks like this post is quite old.
Message me back if you are still arround and maybe we can bounce some ideas off each other.
Hello,
I've noted the date of when the last posting on this thread was made and am wondering if there is any further intrest from other people on the topic.
I am also changing careers at 27. Currently attending a carpentry course to brush up on basic woodworking skills at NVQ level 2. I have the Boat Building Academy in mind in Lyme Regis for further training.
However everything depends on what the industry is like as far as wooden boatbuilding skills are concerned. Realistically I know it will be necessary to learn skills using synthetic materials and more modren repair/building techniques. But I wonder how well the U.K boatbuilding/repair/restoration industry can accomodate potential employees.
if there are any other people out there in a similar situation it would be good to hear back on this thread.
Hi guys,
I am in a similar situation as the two of you. I noticed the dates of your posts.I am wondering if you have proceeded with your shipwright careers? I am also researching the industry to determine the viability of my anticipated new career path. I live in Canada and haven't found a lot of info on the subject. Any info you have would be greatly appreciated.
